About 6 weeks ago, I succumbed to peer pressure and bought my first Mac, a 13" MacBook. Of course I felt compelled to spend the extra money on the black version. While the initial transaction process went smoothly, the follow up transactions were a fiasco (I may consider writing it up on a separate post).
So far so good. I'm still not convinced that Macs are a complete paradigm shift from a Windows PC but I remain impressed. Impressed enough that my next purchase will be an iMac which I plan to set up in the kitchen to watch TV, answer phones, e-mail and browse the web.
Here's some of my initial positive obserations from some basic usage (I'll post the negatives later):
- When I shut off my machine, it actually shuts off immediately. Even on a fairly new Thinkpad T60, it sometimes wouldn't shut off and go dead in my briefcase.
- When it suspends, it really suspends. I can actually just shut the lid while it's on and still have plenty of juice left the next day.
- WiFi connection is a breeze compared to a Windows PC. I'm perplexed why Windows can't just duplicate this.
- Webcam configuration through the built-in iSight camera worked flawlessly the first time. Last time I tried to configure a Webcam on my PC, I gave up.
- Battery life is great. I haven't measured it but so far, I have yet to run out of juice in a single sitting.
